This sculpture, "Journey through a Crypt," reflects on the idea of morality and what it means to live a meaningful life. I wanted to visually communicate a story that represented both life and death, and what you do in between those stages. Throughout this design process, I knew that I wanted to construct my box as a crypt; although creepy and mildly unsettling, I felt that it would communicate my ideas best. The box itself was the easiest part; designing objects for the interior was my biggest challenge. I eventually settled on a star chart compass, extinguished candles, a heart, and a charm. The star compass features both a sun and a star chart, representing lightness and darkness, two themes that play heavily into mortality. The decision behind the candle was for them to be extinguished, symbolically as if a life force had ended, while being an index of a sealed crypt.

This project was particularly exciting to work on and problem solve for, from working with foam core to creating realistic objects that portrayed the meaning I wanted. I felt that I learned more about how to produce quality work with a multitude of materials.
